Wednesday Morning Quarterback - Week 14: A Shot in the Dark? (12/3/08)

Much has been said and written in recent days about erstwhile Giants’ Super Bowl hero WR Plaxico Burress and his ill-fated foray into Manhattan’s Latin Quarter night club last Friday evening.  Resist the urge to read yet another story about this incident - just be thankful he didn’t hurt anyone besides himself (or beside him), and move on.  You have more important things on your mind - like the economy, the holiday season, and (hopefully) your league’s fantasy football playoffs.

At the risk of stating the obvious and repeating myself from previous posts, you must remain vigilant if you hope to capture your fantasy football league’s championship.  The team that got you to the playoffs isn’t necessarily the team that will allow you to win the championship.  Go over your players’ matchups as closely as time permits, shore up any perceived weaknesses, then sit back and let the fun begin.  It can be difficult justifying to yourself (let alone others) why you’ve decided to go with Justin Fargas as one of your RBs instead of Brian Westbrook in a playoff game.  However, if that’s the more favorable matchup, then you must take advantage of that.  People will remember who won your league’s championship - hardly anyone will remember (or care) who was on the winning team’s roster.

Even though this week’s Thursday night game has the potential to be a snoozer, there are still players on both teams who can help guide your team to victory this week.

Oakland at San Diego - Before the season began many thought San Diego would be a Super Bowl contender, and many thought Oakland would be right about where they are now.  Yes, San Diego lost defensive stalwart Shawne Merriman at the start of the season, but few predicted that his absence would result in the defensive unit’s total collapse.  Ed Hochuli is probably one of the most relieved men in America, as it looks like his refereeing blunder in the Week 2 Chargers-Broncos game will turn out to be irrelevant (unless you were betting on the outcome of that particular game).  RB Justin Fargas and TE Zach Miller (Probable - groin) are the only Raiders worth starting.  For the Chargers start QB Philip Rivers, RB LaDainian Tomlinson, TE Antonio Gates, WRs Chris Chambers & Vincent Jackson, K Nate Kaeding, and the Defense.

More to come on Friday!
