Normally at this time of year fantasy football diehards are in heaven.  Off-season training activities (aka OTAs) are in the rearview mirror, training camps are getting set to open, and the shelves in the magazine sections of bookstores are crammed with your choice of approximately two dozen fantasy football publications.

Of course this season there is no normal, much less any football activity going on, unless you count the “negotiations” aimed at ending the lockout (which I don’t).  Most football fans couldn’t care less about the issues involved in the lockout - just get this thing settled, get back to work, and we’ll all be happy.

Still, at least some fantasy football leagues are acting as though there’s nothing wrong with this picture - drafts are being held as though we knew which players would be playing where.  I’ve taken part in two such drafts so far - thankfully, one of them was a mock draft, but the other one was an “industry experts” draft held at the Fantasy Sports Trade Association’s (FSTA’s) recent conference in San Francisco.  These drafts were simultaneously the most fun, random, and pointless activities I’ve participated in in quite some time.

For those lost souls among us who insist on drafting their fantasy teams for this season before the lockout is settled, I offer the following five strategy tips for drafting the best team possible:

1. Draft running backs sooner than you would in a “normal” season and quarterbacks/wide receivers later than you normally would.  It stands to reason that with less prep time than teams usually have before the season kicks off that teams will rely more on the run and less on the pass just because the quarterbacks’ timing with their receivers might be a bit off.  Don’t be surprised if there are an usually high number of low-scoring contests the first month of the season - defenses should have less sophisticated game plans to contend with than usual.
2. Favor players in stable situations.  By that I mean look for teams where the head coach, offensive coordinator, quarterback, and key running backs/receivers from last season are all returning.  Teams that don’t have to make major overhauls during an abbreviated training camp should be the most prepared for the start of the season.
3. Avoid returning players with an uncertain situation at quarterback. Arizona, Minnesota, Seattle, Tennessee and Washington all fit that description - bump their skill position players down a bit in your rankings.
4. Avoid players likely to switch teams once the lockout ends and free agency begins.  Don’t get cute and draft Carson Palmer, Kevin Kolb or Donovan McNabb as your first quarterback - you’ll regret it.
5. Avoid rookie wide receivers not named Julio Jones.  See tip #1 above.  Thinking of drafting A. J. Green?   Who’s going to be his quarterback?  If you know the answer to that, please share your crystal ball with the rest of us.

With the fantasy football league playoffs now in full swing you’re either in the mix and looking for every advantage possible, or you’re on the outside looking in (I trust if you’re a regular reader of this blog, then it’s the former).  It seems that this week’s games fall into one of two categories: (1) games between two lousy teams, or (2) games with playoff implications.  Here are my recommendations for Week 15 - all games are Sunday during the day unless otherwise noted:

San Francisco at San Diego (Thursday night) - Both teams need a win to stay in the playoff chase, but San Diego’s the more talented of the two teams, especially on defense.  San Diego 31 San Francisco 17.

Buffalo at Miami (Sunday early) - Neither team will score much, and Miami quarterback Chad Henne is doing everything he can to convince head coach Tony Sparano that he’s not the Dolphins’ quarterback of the future.  When all is said and done, Miami will still find a way to win this game.  Miami 20 Buffalo 14.

Detroit at Tampa Bay - Is it wrong to say that the Lions are playing for pride?  Tampa showed signs of life at the end of the 2009 season after a rough start, but you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who picked them as a playoff contender in 2010.  The Bucs will keep hope alive with yet another come-from-behind victory  Tampa Bay 21 Detroit 17.

I’m going out on a limb here and guessing that I’m not the only one sick of hearing about Brett Favre’s ankle, although I guess that beats reading about how he apparently spends his free time.  Hard as it may be to believe, there are plenty of intriguing storylines for this weekend’s slate of 13 games that have nothing to do with #4.  Here are my recommendations for Week 8 - all games are Sunday during the day unless otherwise noted:

Buffalo at Kansas City (Sunday early) - Is Ryan Fitzpatrick as good as he’s looked the past four weeks?  Is Matt Cassel as good as he looked in 2008?  Even if both quarterbacks play up to their potential this week, Kansas City will keep Buffalo winless thanks to its overpowering ground game.  Kansas City 27  Buffalo 24.

Carolina at St. Louis - Both teams have been bitten early and often by the injury bug.  Carolina’s Steve Smith has been hampered by a high ankle sprain; now DeAngelo Williams is likely to miss the game with a foot injury.  Things are only slightly better on the St. Louis side, where Steven Jackson may miss the game with a finger injury, and the depleted wide receiving corps will be without Danario Alexander.  Carolina will eke out a win in this battle of the walking wounded.  Carolina 20 St. Louis 17.

Tennessee at San Diego (Sunday late)  - If you went by the team stats, you’d think San Diego was the 5-2 team in this matchup and Tennessee was the 2-5 team.  Of course, this being the NFL, exactly the opposite is true.  Chris Johnson is dealing with a thigh injury and depending on your other available options, this may be a good week to sit him.  San Diego’s wide receiver corps and tight end Anthony Gates are both dealing with injuries, but expect San Diego to win this game relatively easily.  San Diego 30 Tennessee 17.

Houston at Indianapolis (Monday night) - Two weeks ago the Monday night contest featured Tennessee and Jacksonville; this week the other two AFC South teams take center stage.  Houston won their opening week matchup with the Colts in stunning fashion.  Indianapolis may be pulling people from the stands to play the skill positions by the end of the game.  Still, as long as Peyton Manning’s at the helm, and the inconsistent Texans are on the other side of the ball, you have to believe that the Colts will emerge victorious.  Indianapolis 35 Houston 31.

Hi everyone,

Congratulations if you drafted Philip Rivers this season knowing that he was going to outperform Matt Schaub and Tom Brady.  High-five if you felt that Arian Foster, Rashard Mendenhall, and Peyton Hillis were going to be more productive than Maurice Jones-Drew, Ray Rice, and Steven Jackson.  Fist-bump if you predicted that Brandon Lloyd was going to have a better season than Brandon Marshall.  

Every season has its anomalies, and this one is no exception.  Keep proposing trades and working the waiver wire judiciously, and you’ll be able to overcome most “mistakes” you made on draft day (unless Ryan Grant and Matthew Stafford were both key players on your team, but I digress).  Here are my recommendations for Week 7 - all games are Sunday during the day unless otherwise noted:

Cincinnati at Atlanta (Sunday early) - The Bengals are coming off a bye week; the Falcons are coming off an embarrassing loss in Philadelphia.  Both offenses can be explosive, but both defensive units are good enough that this shouldn’t be a high-scoring game.  Carson Palmer gets the better of Matt Ryan, and all the pundits who predicted a few weeks ago that Atlanta would get to the Super Bowl enlist in the Witness Protection Program.  Cincinnati 24  Atlanta 21.

Pittsburgh at Miami - Steeler QB Ben Roethlisberger hardly missed a beat in throwing for three touchdowns last weekend in his first game back from his suspension for allegedly raping a woman in a bathroom violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.  Miami won’t be able to run the football against Steel Curtain 2.0, and Chad Henne has looked shaky at times this season, but he’ll have success throwing against Pittsburgh’s  secondary - just not quite enough.  Pittsburgh 30 Miami 27.

Buffalo at Baltimore - Next April the Bills will have to choose between quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Jake Locker.  This weekend the Bills will have to choose between quarterbacks Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm.  The results of this game will surprise no one.  Baltimore 27 Buffalo 14.

Washington at Chicago - Bears’ quarterback Jay Cutler started off the season with a bang, but the last few weeks he’s been getting sacked seemingly on every other play.  Part of the blame lies with Cutler and his tendency to hang onto the ball too long, but most of the problem lies with the offensive line.  Meanwhile Redskins’ quarterback Donovan McNabb is taking well to his new surroundings.  Chicago pulls this game out on the strength of Matt Forte’s pass-catching abilities.  Chicago 27 Washington 24.

Philadelphia at Tennessee - Back when Eagles running back LeSean McCoy was a wee lad Titans coach Jeff Fisher was an assistant for the Eagles.  What bearing does that have on this game?  None whatsoever.  Philadelphia has two talented quarterbacks, only one of whom is currently injured.  Tennessee has two mediocre quarterbacks, both of whom are currently injured.  Philadelphia will win, in spite of missing DeSean Jackson.  Philadelphia 24 Tennessee 17.
