Week 10 Player Recommendations (Wed 11/9/11)

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Oakland at San Diego (Thursday night) – Can Philip Rivers pull both himself and the Chargers out of a tailspin?  Can Michael Bush build on his momentum from last week?  The answer is “yes” to both of these questions, but without Darren McFadden, the Raiders will still come up short.  San Diego 31, Oakland 24.

  • Oakland
    • Start:  RB Michael Bush, TE Kevin Boss
    • Neutral:  QB Carson Palmer (Probable-quad), WRs Darrius Heyward-Bey, Denarius Moore, & Jacoby Ford
    • Sit:  RBs Darren McFadden (Out-foot) & Marcel Reese (Probable-shoulder), WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, DEF, K Sebastian Janikowski (Questionable-hamstring)
  • San Diego
    • Start:  QB Philip Rivers, RB Mike Tolbert, WRs Vincent Jackson & Vincent Brown, TE Antonio Gates, K Nick Novak
    • Neutral:  RB Ryan Mathews (Probable-groin), DEF
    • Sit:  WR Patrick Crayton, TE Randy McMichael, WR Malcom Floyd (Doubtful-hip)

New Orleans at Atlanta (Sunday early) – The team that wins this game will be in the driver’s seat in the NFC South.  The Falcons were my preseason pick to win the Super Bowl, but unless they stop with the Jekyll and Hyde routine, that’s not going to happen.  Plenty of fantasy value to go around on both teams in this contest, but New Orleans has just a bit more offensive firepower, even with Julio Jones at full strength.  New Orleans 31, Atlanta 24.

  • New Orleans
    • Start:  QB Drew Brees, RB Darren Sproles, WR Marques Colston, TE Jimmy Graham, K John Kasay
    • Neutral:  RB Pierre Thomas, WR Lance Moore, DEF
    • Sit:  RBs Mark Ingram  (Questionable-heel) & Chris Ivory (Questionable-hamstring), WRs Devery Henderson & Robert Meachem
  • Atlanta
    • Start:  QB Matt Ryan, RB Michael Turner, WRs Roddy White & Julio Jones
    • Neutral:  TE Tony Gonzalez (Questionable-back), K Matt Bryant
    • Sit:  RBs Jacquizz Rodgers & Jason Snelling, WR Harry Douglas, DEF

Houston at Tampa Bay – Both starting quarterbacks in this game have been fantasy disappointments so far this season, but Tampa Bay’s defense will make Matt Schaub look like Aaron Rodgers, at least for one day.  Start virtually any Texan on your fantasy roster, and you should be rewarded handsomely.  Houston 34, Tampa Bay 17.

  • Houston
    • Start:  QB Matt Schaub, RB Arian Foster, WRs Jacoby Jones & Kevin Walter (Probable-ankle), TEs Owen Daniels & Joel Dreessen, DEF, K Neil Rackers
    • Neutral:  RB Ben Tate (Probable-ankle)
    • Sit:  WR Andre Johnson (Questionable-hamstring)
  • Tampa Bay
    • Start:  QB Josh Freeman (Probable-thumb), WR Preston Parker, TE Kellen Winslow
    • Neutral:  WR Mike Williams (Questionable-thigh)
    • Sit:  RBs LeGarrette Blount & Kregg Lumpkin, WRs Dez Briscoe & Arrelious Benn, DEF, K Connor Barth

Arizona at Philadelphia – Just when you thought the Eagles were back on track following their demolition of Dallas, they laid an egg Monday night against Chicago.  The Eagles are already three games behind the Giants; a loss here would be nearly fatal to their slim playoff hopes.  Still, with all their injuries on offense the Cardinals don’t figure to put up much of a fight.  Philadelphia 31, Arizona 17.

  • Arizona
    • Start:  WR Larry Fitzgerald
    • Neutral:  QB John Skelton, RB Beanie Wells (Questionable-knee), WRs Early Doucet & Andre Roberts
    • Sit:  QB Kevin Kolb (Questionable-toe), RB LaRod Stephens-Howling (Questionable-shoulder), TEs Todd Heap (Questionable-hamstring), Rob Houssler (Questionable-groin), & Jeff King, DEF, K Jay Feely
  • Philadelphia
    • Start:  QB Michael Vick, RB LeSean McCoy (Probable-shoulder), WRs DeSean Jackson & Jeremy Maclin, TE Brent Celek, DEF
    • Neutral:  WR Jason Avant, K Alex Henery
    • Sit:  N/A

Washington at Miami – Neither quarterback in this game was expected to start this season, but due to injury (Chad Henne) and poor play (Rex Grossman) both Matt Moore and John Beck are getting their opportunity.  These teams are headed in opposite directions, and Miami will continue its “no suck for Luck” surge by winning its second straight.  Miami 24, Washington 21.

  • Washington
    • Start:  QB John Beck, WR Jabar Gaffney, TE Fred Davis (Probable-ankle)
    • Neutral:  RBs Roy Helu & Ryan Torain, WR Terrence Austin, DEF
    • Sit:  RBs Tim Hightower & Tashard Choice (Probable-hamstring), WRs Leonard Hankerson & Anthony Armstrong, K Graham Gano
  • Miami
    • Start:  QB Matt Moore, RB Reggie Bush, WR Brandon Marshall, DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Daniel Thomas, WR Davone Bess, TE Anthony Fasano, K Dan Carpenter
    • Sit:  RB Lex Hilliard

Tennessee at Carolina – Based on last week’s “outburst” it’s time to give Chris Johnson another start in what appears to be a favorable match-up against a poor Panther rushing defense.  Damian Williams won’t make anyone forget Kenny Britt, or even Nate Washington, but he’s quietly turning into a useful fantasy option.  Look for Carolina running back DeAngelo Williams to put a disappointing season behind him and post a useful fantasy line.  Carolina 27, Tennessee 24.

  • Tennessee
    • Start:  QB Matt Hasselbeck (Probable-knee), RB Chris Johnson, WR Damian Williams
    • Neutral:  RB Javon Springer, TE Jared Cook (Questionable-knee), DEF, K Rob Bironas
    • Sit:  WR Nate Washington (Questionable-hip)
  • Carolina
    • Start:  QB Cam Newton, RB DeAngelo Williams, WR Steve Smith, TE Greg Olsen
    • Neutral:  RB Jonathan Stewart, TE Jeremy Shockey, DEF, K Olindo Mare
    • Sit:  WRs Brandon LaFell & Legedu Naanee

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati – Top to bottom the AFC North boasts the best group of team defenses of any division in football.  While the Bengals may not yet be in the same class with Baltimore and Pittsburgh defensively, they’re good enough to make life very difficult for Ben Roethlisberger and crew this week.  Other than the two defenses look elsewhere if you’re desperately seeking fantasy points this weekend.  Pittsburgh 20, Cincinnati 17.

  • Pittsburgh
    • Start:  DEF
    • Neutral:  QB Ben Roethlisberger, WRs Antonio Brown & Mike Wallace, TE Heath Miller
    • Sit:  RB Rashard Mendenhall, WRs Emmanuel Sanders (Questionable-knee), Jerricho Cotchery (Questionable-knee), & Hines Ward (Probable-concussion), K Shaun Suisham
  • Cincinnati
    • Start:  DEF
    • Neutral:  QB Andy Dalton, WRs A.J. Green & Jerome Simpson, TE Jermaine Gresham (Questionable-hamstring)
    • Sit:  RBs Cedric Benson & Bernard Scott, WR Andre Caldwell (Questionable-groin), K Mike Nugent

St. Louis at Cleveland - Steven Jackson will run wild against the Browns, but he’s going to be one of few offensive weapons for the Rams this week.    Fortunately for St. Louis, Cleveland has been hit hard by the injury bug, and the Rams should have just enough offense to eke out the victory.  St. Louis 21, Cleveland 17.

  • St. Louis
    • Start:  RB Steven Jackson (Questionable-foot), WR Brandon Lloyd, DEF
    • Neutral: WR Austin Pettis
    • Sit:  QBs Sam Bradford (Questionable-ankle) & A.J. Feeley, WRs Brandon Gibson, Danario Alexander (Questionable-hamstring), & Greg Salas (IR-leg); TE Lance Kendricks (Questionable-foot), K Josh Brown
  • Cleveland
    • Start:  RB Chris Ogbannaya, TE Ben Watson, DEF
    • Neutral:  WRs Josh Cribbs & Greg Little, TE Evan Moore
    • Sit:  QB Colt McCoy, RBs Montario Hardesty (Out-calf) & Peyton Hillis (Out-hamstring), WR Mohamed Massaquoi (Questionable-concussion), K Phil Dawson (Questionable-migraines)

Buffalo at Dallas – Buffalo’s season is at a crossroad.  Win this game and they’ll be right in the thick of the AFC’s playoff hunt.  Drop this game and they’ll not only fall out of their three-way tie for first place in their division, but they’ll also likely fall behind a handful of wild card contenders.  Dallas is in a similar position sans the opportunity to win their division.  Ryan Fitzpatrick will bounce back this week, but Tony Romo will be victorious, even with Laurent Robinson starting for the re-injured Miles Austin.  Dallas 30, Buffalo 24.

  • Buffalo
    • Start:  QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, RB Fred Jackson, WR Steve Johnson
    • Neutral:  WRs David Nelson & Donald Brown, TE Scott Chandler, K Dave Rayner
    • Sit:  RB C.J. Spiller, WR Naaman Roosevelt, DEF, K Rian Lindell (Questionable-shoulder)
  • Dallas
    • Start:  QB Tony Romo (Probable-ribs), RB DeMarco Murray, WRs Dez Bryant & Laurent Robinson, TE Jason Witten, K Dan Bailey
    • Neutral:  DEF
    • Sit:  RB Felix Jones (Questionable-ankle), WR Miles Austin (Doubtful-hamstring)

Jacksonville at Indianapolis – The Jaguars’ offense is several rungs south of mediocre, but the Colts will make them look like the 2007 Patriots.  Jacob Tamme, stepping in for the injured Dallas Clark, may be the Colts’ leading receiver in his first start of the season.  That’s not a good sign.  Jacksonville 27, Indianapolis 14.

  • Jacksonville
    • Start: RB Maurice Jones-Drew, WRs Mike Thomas & Jason Hill, DEF
    • Neutral:  TE Marcedes Lewis, K Josh Scobee
    • Sit:  QB Blake Gabbert, RB Deji Karim, WR Brian Robiskie
  • Indianapolis
    • Start:  TE Jacob Tamme
    • Neutral:  RBs Delone Carter & Donald Brown, WRs Reggie Wayne & Pierre Garcon, DEF
    • Sit:  QB Curtis Painter, RB Joseph Addai (Questionable-hamstring), WR Austin Collie, TE Dallas Clark (Out-leg), K Adam Vinatieri

Denver at Kansas City – Denver’s offense under Tim Tebow’s direction is reminiscent of watching Navy and Army run the wishbone: it’s not very interesting to watch, but it often gets the job done.  With the Chiefs sporting a poor run defense both Tebow and backfield mate Willis “One Hand” McGahee are good starts.  Kansas City gets another chance to prove that its four-game winning streak wasn’t a mirage, but they don’t have enough offense to win this contest.  Denver 27, Kansas City 21.

  • Denver
    • Start:  QB Tim Tebow, RB Willis McGahee (Probable-hand), WR Eric Decker, DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Knowshon Moreno, WR Eddie Royal, TE Daniel Fells, K Matt Prater
    • Sit:  RB Lance Ball, WR Demaryius Thomas
  • Kansas City
    • Start:  RB Jackie Battle, WR Dwayne Bowe
    • Neutral:  QB Matt Cassel, WR Steve Breaston, DEF
    • Sit:  RB Dexter McCluster, WR Jonathan Baldwin, TE Leonard Pope, K Ryan Succop

Baltimore at Seattle (Sunday late) – After watching the conclusion to last Sunday’s Ravens-Steelers slugfest, you may conclude that Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco has shaken off his season-long slump and is finally back on track.  That would be a mistake.  Baltimore will win this game easily, but Ray Rice will carry the bulk of the load on offense.  Baltimore 27, Seattle 10.

  • Baltimore
    • Start:  RB Ray Rice, WRs Anquan Boldin & Torrey Smith, DEF
    • Neutral:  QB Joe Flacco, TEs Ed Dickson & Dennis Pitta, K Billy Cundiff
    • Sit:  RB Ricky Williams
  • Seattle
    • Start:  N/A
    • Neutral:  DEF
    • Sit:  QB Tarvaris Jackson, RB Marshawn Lynch, WRs Sidney Rice (Probable-foot), Doug Baldwin, Ben Obomanu, & Mike Williams (Questionable-ankle), TE Zach Miller, K Steven Hauschka

Detroit at Chicago – It won’t matter who starts at running back for the Lions - the way for them to beat Chicago is to throw the ball early and often, which should lead to a big day for Matthew Stafford and his receivers.  Earl Bennett had a great game for the Bears in their Monday night victory over the Bears - stash him on your bench if you must, but don’t count on him putting up a similar performance this week.  Detroit 28, Chicago 24.

  • Detroit
    • Start:  QB Matt Stafford (Probable-finger), WR Calvin Johnson, TE Brandon Pettigrew (Probable-elbow)
    • Neutral:  WRs Nate Burleson & Titus Young, DEF, K Jason Hanson (Questionable-knee)
    • Sit:  RBs Jahvid Best (Doubtful-concussion), Maurice Morris, Keiland Williams, & Kevin Smith (Doubtful-one leg),
  • Chicago
    • Start:  RB Matt Forte
    • Neutral:  QB Jay Cutler, RB Marion Barber, WRs Earl Bennett & Devin Hester (Questionable-ankle), DEF, K Robbie Gould
    • Sit:  WRs Johnny Knox & Dane Sanzenbacher, TE Kellen Davis (Questionable-shoulder)

New York Giants at San Francisco – In the same vein as the previous game the Giants’ only hope for beating the 49ers is to rely heavily on Eli Manning and their passing game (my, how times have changed).  Whether you think Eli Manning is now an elite quarterback or not, he should definitely have a field day against the 49ers’ secondary.  Assuming that they’re healthy enough to play, Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter should fine plenty of room to run against the Giants’ defense, but quarterback Alex Smith is in for a stiff test against the G-men’s pass rush.  New York 27, San Francisco 24.

  • New York
    • Start:  QB Eli Manning, WRs Victor Cruz & Mario Manningham, TE Jake Ballard
    • Neutral:  RB Brandon Jacobs, WR Hakeem Nicks (Questionable-hamstring), DEF, K Lawrence Tynes
    • Sit:  RBs Ahmad Bradshaw (Questionable-foot) & D.J. Ware, WR Ramses Barden
  • San Francisco
    • Start:  TE Vernon Davis
    • Neutral: QB Alex Smith, RBs Frank Gore (Questionable-ankle) & Kendall Hunter (Questionable-ankle), WRs Michael Crabtree (Questionable-foot) & Braylon Edwards (Questionable-knee), DEF, K David Akers
    • Sit:  WR Ted Ginn Jr

New England at New York Jets (Sunday night) – Between the Jets’ pass defense and the Patriots’ injuries this is a good week to bench Tom Brady if you’ve got another quarterback with a more favorable match-up (e.g. - the Jets’ Mark Sanchez).  BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ rushing made the difference in the Patriots’ victory over the Jets earlier this season, but he’s banged up and shouldn’t be in your starting lineup this weekend.  If Plaxico Burress and Dustin Keller are able to play, they should join Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley in having big days against the Pats’ woeful pass defense.  New York Jets 24, New England 21.

  • New England
    • Start:  TEs Rob Gronkowski & Aaron Hernandez
    • Neutral:  QB Tom Brady, RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Questionable-toe) & Stevan Ridley, WR Wes Welker (Questionable-ribs) & Deion Branch, DEF
    • Sit:  RBs Kevin Faulk & Danny Woodhead, WRs Julian Edelman & Chad Ochocinco, K Stephen Gostkowski
  • New York
    • Start:  QB Mark Sanchez, WR Santonio Holmes, DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Joe McKnight, WRs Plaxico Burress (Questionable-back) & Jeremy Kerley, TE Dustin Keller (Questionable-concussion), K Nick Folk
    • Sit:  RB Shonn Greene (Questionable-concussion)

Minnesota at Green Bay (Monday night) – Christian Ponder has brought an undeniable spark to the Vikings’ offense since replacing Donovan McNabb, but that’s still nothing compared to the inferno that Aaron Rodgers directs for the Packers.  Unless Minnesota figures out a way to get Adrian Peterson loose in the Green Bay secondary, the Packers should win this game easily.  Green Bay 31, Minnesota 21.

  • Minnesota
    • Start:  QB Christian Ponder, RB Adrian Peterson, WR Percy Harvin, TE Visanthe Shiancoe
    • Neutral:  WR Michael Jenkins
    • Sit:  RB Toby Gerhart, TE Kyle Rudolph, DEF, K Ryan Longwell
  • Green Bay
    • Start:  QB Aaron Rodgers, WRs Greg Jennings & Jordy Nelson, TE Jermichael Finley, DEF, K Mason Crosby
    • Neutral:  WRs James Jones & Donald Driver
    • Sit:  RBs John Starks & Ryan Grant

Good luck this weekend!

Week 9 Player Recommendations (Fri 11/4/11)

Friday, November 4th, 2011

NY Jets at Buffalo (Sunday early) – The Jets are back from their bye week and reasonably healthy; the Bills are coming off an impressive blanking of the Redskins last weekend in Toronto.  Mark Sanchez should have a big day throwing the ball against the Bills defense, but Buffalo’s rushing game will enable them to remain undefeated at home.  Buffalo 27, New York 24.

  • New York
    • Start:  QB Mark Sanchez, WR Santonio Holmes, TE Dustin Keller
    • Neutral:  RB Shonn Greene, WRs Plaxico Burress (Questionable-back) & Jeremy Kerley, DEF, K Nick Folk
    • Sit:  RBs LaDainian Tomlinson & Joe McKnight
  • Buffalo
    • Start: RB Fred Jackson, TE Scott Chandler
    • Neutral: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Probable-chest), WR David Nelson, DEF, K Rian Lindell
    • Sit: RB C.J. Spiller, WRs Steve Johnson, Naaman Roosevelt, & Donald Jones (Probable-ankle)

Seattle at Dallas – Seattle’s defense will keep this game closer than you think, but in the end Dallas’ offense and the Seahawks’ lack of offense will put Dallas back in the win column.  Look for Cowboy rookie running back DeMarco Murray to have another big week.  Dallas 24, Seattle 17.

  • Seattle
    • Start:  WR Sidney Rice (Probable-foot), TE Zach Miller
    • Neutral:  QB Tarvaris Jackson (Probable-pectoral), WRs Doug Baldwin & Ben Obomanu, DEF
    • Sit:  RBs Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett, & Leon Washington; WR Mike Williams (Probable-hamstring), K Steven Hauschka
  • Dallas
    • Start: QB Tony Romo (Probable-ribs), RB DeMarco Murray, WRs Miles Austin & Dez Bryant, TE Jason Witten, DEF
    • Neutral: K Dan Bailey
    • Sit: RBs Phillip Tanner & Felix Jones (Out-ankle), WR Laurent Robinson

Cleveland at Houston – With Peyton Hillis now declared out, and Montario Hardesty already declared out, this game won’t be close (sorry, Chris Ogbannaya owners).  Wade Phillips may have been a lousy head coach, but after the turnaround he’s accomplished with the Texans’ formerly pathetic defense, he belongs in the discussion with Steeler defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau as the best defensive mind in football.  Matt Schaub will continue his mediocre production, but as long as Arian Foster remains healthy, the Texans will cruise to their third straight victory without Andre Johnson.  Houston 27, Cleveland 14.

  • Cleveland
    • Start:  TE Ben Watson
    • Neutral:  RB Chris Ogbannaya, WR Greg Little, TE Evan Moore, DEF
    • Sit:  QB Colt McCoy, RBs Peyton Hillis (Out-hamstring) & Montario Hardesty (Out-calf), WRs Mohamed Massaquoi (Probable-concussion) & Josh Cribbs, K Phil Dawson
  • Houston
    • Start:  RB Arian Foster, TE Owen Daniels, DEF
    • Neutral:  QB Matt Schaub, WRs Kevin Walter (Probable-knee) & Jacoby Jones; TE Joel Dreessen, K Neil Rackers
    • Sit:  RBs Ben Tate (Probable-ankle) & Derrick Ward, WRs Andre Johnson (Out-hamstring) & Derrick Mason (Probable-finger)

Atlanta at Indianapolis – Matt Ryan seems to have healed quickly from his leg injury two weeks ago against the Lions, and the Falcons couldn’t ask for a more favorable matchup coming off their bye week.  Rookie wide receiver Julio Jones will be back, but as usual the Falcons’ passing game will revolve around Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez.  Michael Turner will continue his bounceback season with yet another big game.  Peyton Manning appears no closer to returning, and the Colts appear no closer to winning.  Atlanta 27, Indianapolis 17.

  • Atlanta
    • Start:  QB Matt Ryan, RB Michael Turner, WR Roddy White, TE Tony Gonzalez (Probable-back), DEF
    • Neutral:  WR Julio Jones (Probable-hamstring), K Matt Bryant
    • Sit:  RBs Jason Snelling & Jacquizz Rodgers, WR Harry Douglas
  • Indianapolis
    • Start:  WR Reggie Wayne
    • Neutral:  QB Curtis Painter, WR Pierre Garcon, TE Dallas Clark (Questionable-knee), DEF
    • Sit:  RBs Delone Carter, Joseph Addai (Questionable-hamstring), & Donald Brown; WR Austin Collie, K Adam Vinatieri

Miami at Kansas City – In spite of the Chiefs’ four wins in a row and the Dolphins’ winless record, these two teams are fairly evenly matched.  Matt Cassel will continue his improved play, and at the end of the day the Chiefs will be in sole possession of first place in the AFC West, as hard as that is to believe.  Kansas City 24, Miami 21.

  • Miami
    • Start:   QB Matt Moore (Probable-ribs), RB Reggie Bush, WRs Brandon Marshall & Davone Bess
    • Neutral:  RB Daniel Thomas (Questionable-hamstring), TE Anthony Fasano, DEF
    • Sit:  RB Lex Hilliard, WR Brian Hartline, K Dan Carpenter
  • Kansas City
    • Start:  QB Matt Cassel, WR Dwayne Bowe, DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Jackie Battle, WRs Steve Breaston & Jonathan Baldwin, TE Leonard Pope, K Ryan Succop
    • Sit: RBs Thomas Jones & Dexter McCluster

Tampa Bay at New Orleans – New Orleans embarrassed itself in St. Louis last week, while the Bucs were off.  So, the Saints should win in a blowout, right?  Right.  Josh Freeman will have a decent day throwing against the Saints’ defense, but Drew Brees and the twelve-headed monster that is New Orleans’ passing attack will prove to be way too much for Tampa Bay to handle.  New Orleans 38, Tampa Bay 21.

  • Tampa Bay
    • Start:  QB Josh Freeman (Probable-thumb), WR Mike Williams, TE Kellen Winslow
    • Neutral:  RB LeGarrette Blount (Probable-knee), WR Preston Parker
    • Sit:  RB Kregg Lumpkin, WRs Arrelious Benn, Dez Briscoe & Sammie Stroughter, DEF, K Connor Barth
  • New Orleans
    • Start:  QB Drew Brees, RB Darren Sproles, WR Marques Colston, TE Jimmy Graham, DEF, K John Kasay
    • Neutral:  RBs Mark Ingram (Questionable-heel) & Pierre Thomas, WRs Lance Moore, Robert Meachem, & Devery Henderson
    • Sit:  RB Chris Ivory

San Francisco at Washington - San Francisco has one of the best defenses in football, and Washington has one of the worst offenses in football.  Sounds like an easy win for the 49ers, right?  Not so fast - Alex Smith has barely registered on the fantasy radar screen this season; if it weren’t for Frank Gore’s ability to stay healthy, San Francisco’s offense would be in a lot of trouble.  San Francisco 24, Washington 21.

  • San Francisco
    • Start:  RB Frank Gore, TE Vernon Davis, DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Kendall Hunter, WR Michael Crabtree (Probable-foot), K David Akers
    • Sit:  QB Alex Smith, WRs Braylon Edwards (Probable-knee) & Ted Ginn Jr
  • Washington
    • Start: QB John Beck, WR Jabar Gaffney
    • Neutral:  WRs Anthony Armstrong & Leonard Hankerson, TE Fred Davis (Questionable-ankle), DEF
    • Sit:   RBs Ryan Torain, Roy Helu, & Tashard Choice (Out-hamstring); WR Terrence Austin, TE Logan Paulsen, K Graham Gano

Denver at Oakland (Sunday late) – Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Tebow.  Denver 24, Oakland 21.

  • Denver
    • Start: WRs Eddie Royal & Eric Decker, DEF
    • Neutral:  QB Tim Tebow, RBs Knowshon Moreno, Willis McGahee (Probable-hand) & Lance Ball; TE Daniel Fells, K Matt Prater
    • Sit: WR Demaryius Thomas
  • Oakland
    • Start:  RB Michael Bush, TE Kevin Boss (Probable-concussion), WR Darrius Heyward-Bey
    • Neutral:  QB Carson Palmer, RB Taiwan Jones, WR Denarius Moore, TE Kevin Boss (Questionable-concussion)
    • Sit:  RB Darren McFadden (Out-foot), WRs Jacoby Ford & T.J. Houshmandzadeh, K Sebastian Janikowski (Probable-hamstring)

Cincinnati at Tennessee – Cincinnati’s defense has been the driving force behind the Bengals’ 5-2 start as they continue to hang tight with Pittsburgh and Baltimore in the AFC North standings.  Rookie quarterback Andy Dalton and rookie wide receiver A.J. Green look like they’ve been playing together for years, and Cedric Benson will post a big game in his return from his one-week suspension.  Cincinnati 24, Tennessee 17.

  • Cincinnati
    • Start: QB Andy Dalton, RB Cedric Benson, WR A.J. Green, DEF
    • Neutral:  WR Jerome Simpson, K Mike Nugent
    • Sit:  RB Bernard Scott, WR Andre Caldwell, TE Jermaine Gresham (Doubtful-hamstring)
  • Tennessee
    • Start:  WRs Nate Washington & Damian Williams
    • Neutral:  QB Matt Hasselbeck, WR Lavelle Hawkins, TE Jared Cook, DEF
    • Sit: RBs Chris Johnson & Javon Springer, K Rob Bironas

St.  Louis at Arizona – Injured starting quarterbacks?  Check.  Lousy 1-6 records?  Check.  Looking at these two teams it’s easy to see why San Francisco already has a four-game lead in the NFC West.  Arizona 24, St. Louis 21.

  • St. Louis
    • Start:  RB Steven Jackson, WR Brandon Lloyd
    • Neutral:  QBs Sam Bradford (Questionable-ankle) & A.J. Feeley (whomever starts); WR Brandon Gibson, TE Lance Kendricks, DEF
    • Sit:  RB Cadillac Williams, WRs Danario Alexander (Out-hamstring) & Greg Salas
  • Arizona
    • Start:  WR Larry Fitzgerald, DEF
    • Neutral:  QB John Skelton, RB Beanie Wells (Questionable-knee), WRs Early Doucet & Andre Roberts, TE Jeff King, K Jay Feely
    • Sit:  QB Kevin Kolb (Doubtful-toe), RBs LaRod Stephens-Howling (Questionable-shoulder), Chester Taylor, & Alfonso Smith, TEs Todd Heap (Questionable-hamstring) & Rob Houssler (Out-groin)

New York Giants at New England – So, Eli Manning - you think you’re on par with Tom Brady?  Okay, here’s your big chance to prove it.  The Patriots’ secondary is the league’s worst by a wide margin - the next worst team is giving up 35 yards per game passing less than New England.  Still, the Giants’ pass defense isn’t much better, and Eli Manning will run out of fourth-quarter magic in this game as the Patriots hold on for the victory.  New England 31, New York Giants 30

  • New York
    • Start:  QB Eli Manning, WRs Victor Cruz & Mario Manningham, TE Jake Ballard, K Lawrence Tynes
    • Neutral:  RB Brandon Jacobs
    • Sit:  RBs Ahmad Bradshaw (Doubtful-foot), D.J. Ward, & Da’Rel Scott; WR Hakeem Nicks (Doubtful-hamstring), DEF
  • New England
    • Start:  QB Tom Brady, WR Deion Branch, TE Rob Gronkowski, K Stephen Gostkowski
    • Neutral:  RBs Stevan Ridley & BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Questionable-toe), WR Wes Welker (Questionable-neck), TE Aaron Hernandez (Questionable-knee)
    • Sit:  RBs Kevin Faulk (Questionable-knee), & Danny Woodhead, DEF

Green Bay at San Diego – If Green Bay’s going to lose a game anytime soon, this looks like it should be it.  Green Bay’s seconday has been lousy, even with 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Charles Woodson.  Someday soon the Packers will play a team that plays defense well enough to beat them, but Sunday will not be that day.  Philip Rivers will do his best not to give away a third game in a row, but without a healthy running game, the Chargers don’t stand much chance of righting their ship this week.  Green Bay 28, San Diego 24.

  • Green Bay
    • Start:  QB Aaron Rodgers, WR Greg Jennings & Jordy Nelson, TE Jermichael Finley
    • Neutral:  RBs John Starks & Ryan Grant, WR James Jones, DEF, K Mason Crosby
    • Sit:  WR Donald Driver
  • San Diego
    • Start:  QB Philp Rivers (Questionable-hands), WR Vincent Jackson, TE Antonio Gates
    • Neutral:  RB Mike Tolbert (Probable-hamstring), WRs Malcom Floyd (Questionable-hip) & Patrick Crayton, TE Randy McMichael, DEF, K Nick Novak
    • Sit:  RBs Ryan Mathews (Questionable-groin), Curtis Brinkley (Probable-concussion), & Jacob Hester

Baltimore at Pittsburgh  (Sunday night) – It’s not often that a defensive struggle is the week’s marquis matchup, but that’s indeed the case with this game.  The Steelers were humiliated by the Ravens the opening weekend of the season - there’s little chance that will happen again this time around.  Pittsburgh 20, Baltimore 17.

  • Baltimore
    • Start:  TE Ed Dickson, DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Ray Rice, WRs Anquan Boldin & Torrey Smith, TE Dennis Pitta
    • Sit:  QB Joe Flacco, RB Ricky Williams, WR Lee Evans (Out-ankle), K Billy Cundiff
  • Pittsburgh
    • Start: WR Mike Wallace, TE Heath Miller, DEF
    • Neutral: QB Ben Roethlisberger, WR Antonio Brown
    • Sit: RBs Rashard Mendenhall, Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer, & Mewelde Moore; WRs Emmanuel Sanders (Out-knee) & Hines Ward (Questionable-ankle), K Shaun Suisham

Chicago at Philadelphia (Monday night) – Matt Forte may not have gotten “paid” yet by the Bears, but he and his Eagle counterpart LeSean McCoy are both putting up MVP-caliber seasons (if you ignore Aaron Rodgers).  However, McCoy’s supporting cast is a lot better than Forte’s, and that’s why the Eagles will win this Monday night contest relatively easily.  Philadelphia 34, Chicago 20.

  • Chicago
    • Start:  RB Matt Forte
    • Neutral:  QB Jay Cutler, RB Marion Barber, WRs Roy Williams, Devin Hester, & Johnny Knox; TE Kellen Davis, K Robbie Gould
    • Sit:  WRs Earl Bennett & Dane Sanzenbacher, DEF
  • Philadelphia
    • Start: QB Michael Vick, RB LeSean McCoy, WRs DeSean Jackson & Jeremy Maclin, TE Brent Celek (Probable-hip), DEF, K Alex Henery
    • Neutral: WR Jason Avant
    • Sit: RB Ronnie Brown

Good luck this weekend!

Week 8 Player Recommendations (Fri 10/28/11)

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

Arizona at Baltimore (Sunday early) – Baltimore didn’t look anything like a Super Bowl contender (at least on offense) during last Monday night’s stinker against Jacksonville, but you can safely start all their star players this week against Arizona’s lousy defense.  Stay away from all Cardinals not named Larry Fitzgerald.  Baltimore 27, Arizona 17.

  • Arizona
    • Start:  WR LarryFitzgerald
    • Neutral:  TE Rob Housler, DEF
    • Sit:  QB Kevin Kolb, RBs Beanie Wells (Questionable-knee), Alfonso Smith, & LaRod Stephens-Howling; WRs Early Doucet (Questionable-quad) & Andre Roberts, TEs Todd Heap (Questionable-hamstring) & Jeff King, K Jay Feely
  • Baltimore
    • Start: QB Joe Flacco, RB Ray Rice, WRs Anquan Boldin & Torrey Smith, DEF
    • Neutral: TE Ed Dickson, K Billy Cundiff
    • Sit: RB Ricky Williams, WR Lee Evans (Out-ankle), TE Dennis Pitta

Minnesota at Carolina – Minnesota rookie quarterback Christian Ponder has played fairly well during two home losses.  This week he won’t play quite as well, but the Vikings will win on the road thanks to another big game from Adrian Peterson.  Carolina’s own rookie quarterback Cam Newton won’t find much room to run, but he’ll be able to find the resurgent Steve Smith often enough to keep the game close.  Minnesota 28, Carolina 24.

  • Minnesota
    • Start:  RB Adrian Peterson (Probable-ankle), TE Visanthe Shiancoe (Probable-foot)
    • Neutral:  QB Christian Ponder, WRs WR Percy Harvin (Questionable-ribs) & Michael Jenkins, DEF, K Ryan Longwell
    • Sit:  RB Toby Gerhart, WRs Devin Aromashodu & Greg Camarillo
  • Carolina
    • Start: QB Cam Newton, WR Steve Smith, TE Greg Olsen
    • Neutral: TE Jeremy Shockey, DEF, K Olindo Mare
    • Sit: RBs DeAngelo Williams & Jonathan Stewart

Jacksonville at Houston – Houston will have a hard time not winning the division and making the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.  Jacksonville showed again last Monday night against the Ravens that their defense is much improved over last year’s, but with no weapons on offense besides Maurice Jones-Drew, they’ll fall to Arian Foster and the Texans in another low-scoring game.  Houston 20, Jacksonville 13.

  • Jacksonville
    • Start:  RB Maurice Jones-Drew, DEF
    • Neutral:  WRs Jason Hill (Probable-wrist) & Mike Thomas, TE Marcedes Lewis,
    • Sit:  QB Blaine Gabbert, RB Deji Karim, WR Mike Sims-Walker, K Josh Scobee
  • Houston
    • Start:  RB Arian Foster, TE Owen Daniels, DEF
    • Neutral:  QB Matt Schaub, WR Kevin Walter (Probable-knee), & Jacoby Jones; TE Joel Dreessen
    • Sit:  RBs Ben Tate & Derrick Ward, WR Andre Johnson (Out-hamstring), K Neil Rackers

Miami at New York Giants – The Giants’ offense was just starting to click before their bye week, but Eli Manning and crew will pick up where they left off.  Miami will use their passing attack to keep the game close, but they’ll ultimately fall to 0-7.  New York 27, Miami 21.

  • Miami
    • Start:  WRs Brandon Marshall & Davone Bess
    • Neutral:  QB Matt Moore (Probable-ribs), RB Reggie Bush (Probable-neck), TE Anthony Fasano, DEF
    • Sit:  RBs Daniel Thomas (Out-ribs), Lorenzo Booker, Charles Clay & Steve Slaton; WR Brian Hartline, K Dan Carpenter
  • New York
    • Start:  QB Eli Manning, RB Ahmad Bradshaw, WRs Hakeem Nicks & Victor Cruz, DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Brandon Jacobs (Probable-knee), WR Mario Manningham, TE Jake Ballard, K Lawrence Tynes
    • Sit: RB D.J. Ware

New Orleans at St. Louis – New Orleans crushed Indianapolis last week, and St. Louis isn’t much better than Indianapolis, especially without Sam Bradford, who will miss his second straight game.  The Saints’ offensive juggernaut will continue to role, but a couple of Rams are sill worth starting.  New Orleans 35, St. Louis 14.

  • New Orleans
    • Start:  QB Drew Brees, RB Darren Sproles, WR Marques Colston, TE Jimmy Graham (Probable-ankle), DEF, K John Kasay
    • Neutral:  RB Pierre Thomas, WRs Lance Moore & Robert Meachem
    • Sit:  RB Mark Ingram (Out-heel) & Chris Ivory, WR Devery Henderson
  • St. Louis
    • Start:  RB Steven Jackson, WR Brandon Lloyd
    • Neutral:  TE Lance Kendricks
    • Sit:  QBs Sam Bradford (Out-ankle) & A.J. Feeley, WRs Danario Alexander (Doubtful-hamstring), Greg Salas & Brandon Gibson, TE Michael Hoomanawanui, DEF, K Josh Brown

Indianapolis at Tennessee - It’s unlikely the Colts will have another game as horrible as last week’s Sunday night demolition at the hands of the Saints, but they’re still unlikely to keep this game close.  If Chris Johnson doesn’t show signs of recapturing his dominant form against what passes for the Colts’ rushing defense, then it’s time to sound the alarms.  Tennessee 31, Indianapolis 10.

  • Indianapolis
    • Start:  RB Delone Carter, WR Reggie Wayne, TE Dallas Clark
    • Neutral:  QB Curtis Painter, RB Donald Brown, WR Pierre Garcon
    • Sit:  RB Joseph Addai (Questionable-hamstring), WR Austin Collie, DEF, K Adam Vinatieri
  • Tennessee
    • Start:  RB Chris Johnson, WR Nate Washington, TE Jared Cook, DEF, K Rob Bironas
    • Neutral:  QB Matt Hasselbeck (Probable-thumb), WR Lavelle Hawkins
    • Sit:   RB Javon Springer, WR Damian Williams

Washington at Buffalo (in Toronto) (Sunday late) – The NFL takes its show on the road to another country for the second week in a row.  Fortunately, the Bills had last week off to rest up for their long trip north.  Redskins’ quarterback John Beck looked okay last week against the Panters, but the Bills’ defense might make him look like Aaron Rodgers.  Buffalo’s stars will have a good game, but Bills’ fans may quickly start questioning the wisdom of giving Ryan Fitzpatrick a new long-term contract.  Washington 30, Buffalo 24.

  • Washington
    • Start:  QB John Beck, WR Jabar Gaffney, TE Fred Davis, K Graham Gano
    • Neutral:  RBs Ryan Torain & Roy Helu, WR Anthony Armstrong & Terrence Austin, DEF
    • Sit:  WR Leonard Hankerson & Donte Stallworth (Probable-hamstring)
  • Buffalo
    • Start:  RB Fred Jackson, WR Steve Johnson
    • Neutral:  QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, RB C.J. Spiller, WR David Nelson, K Rian Lindell
    • Sit:  WRs Naaman Roosevelt & Donald Jones (Out-ankle), TE Scott Chandler, DEF

Detroit at Denver – Will the whole crowd be Tebowing at the end of this game, or will the Lions right the ship after dropping two consecutive games at home?  Detroit figures to have more success passing than rushing, while the opposite holds true for the Broncos.  With Willis McGahee out look for Knowshon Moreno to leapfrog Lance Bell (if not Tim Tebow) in the Broncos’ rushing attack.  Detroit 27, Denver 20.

  • Detroit
    • Start:  WR Calvin Johnson, TE Brandon Pettigrew, DEF
    • Neutral:  QB Matthew Stafford (Questionable-ankle), RBs Maurice Morris & Keiland Williams, K Jason Hanson
    • Sit:  RB Jahvid Best (Out-concussion), WRs Nate Burleson & Titus Young
  • Denver
    • Start:  QB Tim Tebow, RB Knowshon Moreno, TE Daniel Fells
    • Neutral:  RB Lance Ball, WRs Eric Decker & Demaryius Thomas, DEF
    • Sit:  RB Willis McGahee (Out-hand), WR Eddie Royal, K Matt Prater

New England at Pittsburgh – The Patriots may have “owned” this matchup in recent seasons, but it’s hard to imagine their defense slowing down Pittsburgh’s offense long enough for them to win the game.  New England will match their top-ranked passing game against the Steelers’ top-ranked pass defense.  However, the game will ultimately be decided by the stronger running game, and that figures to be the Steelers’.  Pittsburgh 31, New England 24.

  • New England
    • Start:  WR Wes Welker, TEs Rob Gronkowski (Questionable-pictures) & Aaron Hernandez
    • Neutral:  QB Tom Brady, RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Questionable-toe), Stevan Ridley, WR Deion Branch, K Stephen Gostkowski
    • Sit:  WR Chad Ochocinco, DEF
  • Pittsburgh
    • Start:  QB Ben Roethlisberger, RB Rashard Mendenhall, WRs Mike Wallace & Antonio Brown, TE Heath Miller, K Shaun Suisham
    • Neutral:  WR Emmanuel Sanders, DEF
    • Sit:  RBs Isaac Redman & Jonathan Dwyer, WR Hines Ward (Questionable-ankle)

Cleveland at San Francisco – Neither team figures to score much in this contest, but the 49ers will win because they have the stronger defense.  Peyton Hillis is still missing in action, but with Ben Watson being hindered by a concussion, Evan Moore could have a breakout week.  San Francisco 20, Cleveland 17

  • Cleveland
    • Start:  TE Evan Moore, DEF
    • Neutral:  QB Colt McCoy, RB Montario Hardesty, WR Greg Little
    • Sit:  RB Peyton Hillis (Questionable-hamstring), WRs Mohamed Massaquoi (Out-concussion), Brian Robiskie & Josh Cribbs; TE Ben Watson (Questionable-concussion), K Phil Dawson (Probable-thigh)
  • San Francisco
    • Start:  RB Frank Gore, TE Vernon Davis, DEF
    • Neutral:  WR Michael Crabtree (Probable-foot)
    • Sit:  QB Alex Smith, RB Kendall Hunter, WRs Braylon Edwards (Questionable-knee) & Ted Ginn Jr, K David Akers

Cincinnati at Seattle – Another game featuring theams from the AFC North and NFC West with strong defenses and questionable offenses, but the AFC North team will prevail in this game.  Bernard Scott won’t do much in place of the suspended Cedric Benson, but improving rookie quarterback Andy Dalton will connect with his receivers often enough for the Bengals to win.  Cincinnati 20, Seattle 10.

  • Cincinnati
    • Start:  QB Andy Dalton, WRs A.J. Green & Jerome Simpson, TE Jermaine Gresham (Probable-hamstring), DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Bernard Scott, WR Andre Caldwell
    • Sit:  RB Cedric Benson (Out-suspension), K Mike Nugent
  • Seattle
    • Start:  DEF
    • Neutral:  TE Zach Miller (Probable-concussion)
    • Sit:  QBs Charlie Whitehurst & Tarvaris Jackson (Questionable-pectoral), RBs Marshawn Lynch (Probable-back), Justin Forsett, & Leon Washington; WRs Mike Williams, Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin, & Ben Obomanu, K Steven Hauschka

Dallas at Philadelphia  (Sunday night) – Last week Cowboys’ rookie running back DeMarco Ryan claimed the starting job with a dominant performance against the Rams.  He won’t reach 250+ yards rushing this week, but he’ll do enough to warrant a spot in your starting lineup.  The Bad Dream Team returns after a bye week - LeSean McCoy won’t have much room to run, but look for Michael Vick to utilize McCoy early and often in the passing game.  Dallas 30, Philadelphia 28.

  • Dallas
    • Start:  QB Tony Romo (Probable-ribs), RB DeMarco Murray, WRs Miles Austin & Dez Bryant, TE Jason Witten, K Dan Bailey
    • Neutral:  RB Phillip Tanner, DEF
    • Sit:  RBs Felix Jones (Ankle-out)
  • Philadelphia
    • Start:  QB Michael Vick, RB LeSean McCoy, WRs DeSean Jackson & Jeremy Maclin
    • Neutral:  WR Jason Avant, TE Brent Celek, K Alex Henery
    • Sit:  RB Ronnie Brown, DEF

San Diego at Kansas City (Monday night) – The Chiefs blew out a reeling Oakland team last week, while the Chargers blew a game to the Jets they should have won.  Kansas City would tie the Chargers with a win and played them surprisingly close in Week 3, but it’s still too much of a stretch, especially with a healthy (enough) Antonio Gates back in action.  San Diego 28, Kansas City 20.

  • San Diego
    • Start:  QB Philip Rivers, RB Ryan Mathews (Probable-thumb), WR Vincent Jackson, TE Antonio Gates, DEF
    • Neutral:  RB Mike Tolbert (Questionable-hamstring), K Nick Novak, WR Malcom Floyd (Questionable-hip)
    • Sit:  WR Patrick Crayton, TE Randy McMichael
  • Kansas City
    • Start:  RB Jackie Battle, WR Dwayne Bowe
    • Neutral:  WR Steve Breaston, TE Leonard Pope, DEF
    • Sit:  QB Matt Cassel, RBs Thomas Jones & Dexter McCluster, K Ryan Succop

Good luck this weekend!
